What Are Dental Crowns and When Do You Need One in Karachi?

A crown (also called a cap) is a tooth-shaped covering that fits over a damaged, weakened, or badly decayed tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. Crowns are recommended after root canal treatment, for fractured teeth, heavily filled teeth at risk of breaking, or for cosmetic improvement of misshapen teeth.

  • Zirconia crowns: Strongest material, metal-free, ideal for back teeth
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): Durable with good aesthetics, long-established option
  • Full porcelain / E-max: Highest aesthetic result for front teeth, very natural light reflection
  • Same-shade matching to your adjacent natural teeth for seamless integration

Dental Bridges — Replacing Missing Teeth

A bridge literally ‘bridges’ the gap left by one or more missing teeth. It consists of two crowns placed on the teeth on either side of the gap (called abutment teeth), with an artificial tooth (pontic) suspended between them. Bridges are a fixed, non-removable option that restores chewing function and prevents adjacent teeth from drifting into the gap.

  • Replaces 1–3 consecutive missing teeth
  • Fixed in place — no removal required
  • Restores full chewing function
  • Prevents bone loss and tooth drifting around the gap
  • More affordable than implants in the short term

Crown vs. Bridge vs. Implant — How We Decide

Choosing the right restoration depends on several factors: the number of missing teeth, the health of adjacent teeth, jawbone density, and your budget. Prof. Dr. Shoaib Khan will present all suitable options with honest clinical guidance, so you can make an informed decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does a crown or bridge last?

A: With proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups, a well-made crown or bridge lasts 10–15 years and often longer. Zirconia crowns are particularly durable and can last 20+ years.

Q: Is the procedure painful?

A: Crowns and bridges are placed under local anaesthesia, so the preparation process is comfortable. After the anaesthesia wears off, mild sensitivity for a few days is normal and expected.

Q: How many appointments does a crown take?

A: Typically two appointments: the first to prepare the tooth and take impressions, the second (1–2 weeks later) to fit and cement the permanent crown. A temporary crown is placed in between to protect the tooth.

Q: Can a crown fall off?

A: Properly cemented crowns rarely fall off. If a crown does come loose, contact us immediately. Do not attempt to re-cement it yourself. Bring the crown to your appointment — it may be re-cemented if undamaged.

Q: Should I get a bridge or an implant for a missing tooth?

A: An implant is generally the gold standard for replacing a missing tooth as it preserves bone and does not affect adjacent teeth. However, bridges are a valid option when adjacent teeth already need crowns, when implant surgery is not suitable, or when cost is a consideration. We will advise based on your specific situation.
